Phil had been training hard for the British Swimming Championships and all that hard work paid off, he came away with a Silver medal narrowly missed out on the gold by 0.09 of a second, tough to take missing out by such a small margin, however there was some good news for Phil.

Phil went into the 2023 British Championships looking to medal and to set a new Welsh record in the 200m Breaststroke. The 200m Breaststroke record was set by Paul Jenkins at the European Championships in 1993 at 2:45.67 and has stood for 30 years, Phil had a steady relaxed start to the race turning at the 100m mark on 1:17.32, he was 3.63seconds behind Alex Goforth from Hastings with 50m to go, Phil was catching Alex with every stroke, and it looked like Phil would take the win but ran out of pool finishing that 0.09 seconds behind Alex creating probably the most exciting finish at this year meet..

Phil’s finish time was 2:41.52, that is what the good news was as Phil smashed the Welsh 200m Breaststroke record that had stood for 30 years by a whopping 4.15 seconds.

Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Phil on his Silver medal success and on his record breaking swim, lets hope its another 30 years before it gets broken again.
