A Holywell Legend Passes

We are very sorry to announce that Terry Hughes AKA ‘Old Terry’ passed away peacefully on the 10th October 2021.

Terry was a founding member of the vibrant and highly successful Holywell Amateur Swimming Club (founded in 1970), Terry was still coaching 5 times a week through his 70s and early 80s until his retirement in 2017.

No other coaches voice could penetrate the water offering encouragement in a race like Terry nor emulate his genuine pleasure at the achievements of all the swimmers.

Terry took great pride in swimmers who won races, but he was never happier than when one of his charges swam a personal best and it was Terry’s enthusiasm that help them perform.

He was the bespecticled gent on poolside in his yellow vest and shorts, who always had a boiled sweet or a toffee to hand, not to mention the spare goggles and swim costumes and hats that is the essence of Holywell Swimming Club.

His great gift was to encourage children to believe in themselves and give them confidence for the wider world.

We will all miss you Terry you are a legend and we (Holywell Swimming Club) will uphold your ethos of the kids achieving their best, that they can in and out of the water.
