IPC Glasgow
Two of our senior swimmers Faye Harvey and Sean Barnard both gave up their time to help out others in our sport of swimming
Faye attended the IPC Swimming World Championships at Tollcross International in Glassgow, Faye was there as a massage therapist supplying massages to any of the athletes that requested it.
Faye saw some incredible swimming and was lucky enough to witness swimmers breaking world records and saw Oliver Hynd win GB’s first of 10 golds the GB team won at the Championships.
In Faye’s words, “it was an inspirational week, i was humbled and it made me feel like I have no right to complain anymore, especially after seeing what some of the swimmers had to cope with”, Faye said the speed that they swim at was extraordinary and she was definitely inspired by all of them, and their different stories.
Sean’s experience was overseas, on the 27th of June Sean flew to Accra, the capital of Ghana in Africa, he spent two weeks participating in a sports coaching volunteer project.
Sean taught 8 – 14 year old children to swim in their local pool, the children were from a football academy aimed at supporting children with an aim to get them out of poverty through sports and a sports education program.
Sean started the day teaching early morning sessions to the local students, lessons consisted of 4 beginners in a group, Sean managed to teach non-swimmers to swim a full length within one week, a great achievement for the swimmers and a valuable life skill to learn, and a credit to seans teaching ability,.
Sean shared a house with 15 other volunteers from the UK who were all teaching a variety of sports such as rugby, football, and netball.
In Seans words, “i found it to be a great opportunity to travel and experience a new culture”.
Well done both of you, hopefully we will see one of Sean’s pupils compete at an Olympic games…..you never know.
